Late. Late for a very important date. I pulled my silver fob watch out of my waistcoat pocket for the hundredth time. I depressed the button at the top to make the front plate flip open. I looked at the time. Late. Absolutely, undeniably late. Oh well, I tried to reassure myself. There is absolutely nothing I can do about it now. I looked up out the train window, and tried to let the passing scenery, gentle sway, and the clack, clack, clickety clack of the train sooth me. I fiddled with the pocket watch still in my hands, opening and closing the front, then opening the back plate as well to see the skeleton of the mechanics turning and clicking into place. I ran my thumb over the detail of the case engraving. I started to wind the watch. Slowly and gently I twisted the winder, ensuring the watch will keep ticking for another day. I took a deep breath as I wound. Late or not, it will keep ticking. As will I, I thought. As will I.
