Hesitantly I set my fingers at the tiny round letter keys. I let them pause there, poised while I looked at them, and considered. My fingers were long and pale, but strong. Now I knew how strong they were. I’d spent so long avoiding the sun, spending summer and winter in this abandoned warehouse. Venturing out in the evening, to take a meal, or a drink with concerned friends. Only then would my strong hands fidget. I would twist the ring on my right hand. Rubbing my thumb across its smooth Stirling silver surface then looking into the tiny machine parts set in its face—a reminder. I looked at it now, seeming to wink in the lamp light, poised at the keys. I took a slow deep breath, and I began to type. Steam released somewhere in the building above me, a weight fell, and gears began to grind and turn.
