Behind the rain streaked glass pane a red satin pin cushion bristled with a rainbow of crystals and beads. I wiped the drops from the window and pressed my nose up against the glass to try and see better. Which were my favourites? Red, amber and green cut glass, black beads flecked with gold paint, tiny brass separators all strung on steel hat pin shafts. But my favourites, I decided, were the pair with smoky glass, pearls and tiny brass bells hanging from long chains. Inside the shop the attendant pinned them into my bun of dark brown hair. As I span around in front of the mirror, my skirts swished, the bells tinkled and the sun came out from behind the cloud sending darting specks of light all around the room from the dancing crystals in my hair.
