The reassuring clatter of my homecoming dinner party echoed about the dining room. I sat straight at the head of the table, but I let my spine relax a little, my new Chinese silk brocade corset could do some of the work. It was all going swimmingly. The guests sweated and exclaimed good naturedly over the spicy Indian dishes, and drank thirstily from the clear, cool, chilled summer wines. Great wicker fans beat slowly back and forth overhead, gently moving the ladies lace collars, and the gentlemen’s thinning hair strands. I’d forgone my usual extravagant floral centre piece, to ensure that no one missed my new prized possession. The reassuringly weighty pendant rested against the warm skin of my décolletage. I’d had it made from a fob watch – the eternal companion of my eccentric travelling uncle — with a few heirloom gems. In the warm light of the dinner party it sparkled and shone. The amazing internal engravings were now exposed to the admiring eyes of my dinner guests. “You really must tell me where in your travels you found that glorious pendant,” exclaimed Esmeralda, turning towards me from her plate of curry and roti. I returned from my satisfied musings as if I’d never departed, the effervescent and radiant hostess.
