Time, she’d said. I just need more time. I’d fled her garden, like a madman, or a criminal I’d dashed down streets, choosing this one or that at random, splashing through puddles I’d rather not consider to closely. Until now, finally exhausted, I find myself leaning against filthy bricks, staring vacantly at a dirty window, unsure whether to laugh or cry and my erratic behaviour. What must she have thought of me, when I should have been calm and reassuring, to fly the scene like a startled parrot? I couldn’t help but snort. No doubt such things do indeed take time. I could accept that, she could have all the time in the world.
I rubbed my forehead with the back of my hand and started to straighten my appearance in the meagre reflection of the window. Inside was a most startling array of clockwork derived objects. At the base of the display was a pendant, of most unusual design. Watch plates, a regulator and balance wheel were paused, as if in ice, and sprinkled with cool blue tanzanites. If I could, I would freeze time for her. Saving that, a token of my understanding did not seem out of order.
