Button Covers

From under the machine I heard the bells toll noon. Noon. Already?! My word. I’d wriggled out, kicked the leaver for full shut down, and bolted through door before I’d managed a second thought. Somehow I even had my suit jacket in tow. I legged it down the alley towards the main square. Black grease rag from my back pocket swiftly tied became shimmering cravat. I washed my hands in a bucket of rain water as I passed, and used the water to flatten my hair. Round the corner onto the high street, I unrolled my sleeves and struggled into the jacket. Carnation from the vase of a street side café table for the button hole. At the final corner into the square and fished the finishing touch from my trouser pocket. A little something I’d devised for just such occasions. I slipped the brass button covers over the buttons of my cuffs, flicked my arms to straighten the jacket into position and strode across the square; I felt sure only pardonably late for my appointment.
