Clockwork Pendants

The pendants seemed to glow from where they sat, arranged within the travelling market display. Each was framed in its own black velvet square. The dusty sunlight danced across resin surfaces, dived into clockwork parts and sparkled across a scattering of gems. I picked one up, gently removing the pendant and its satin cord from the box. As I held it up, cord looped over my fingers, sunlight shone through openings in the main plate—dyed red as though through cathedral stained glass where it passed through industrial rubies. The pendant was smooth all over, front and back, and when I hung it around my neck it nestled soft and warm in the slight indent between my clavicles. It felt right, two components slotted into place. I looked with pleasure at the result in the brass-stand shaving mirror, my aesthetic mechanism slightly exposed.
