Clockwork Earrings

Industrial rubies like pinpricks of blood hid deep in the mechanics of the delicate wrist watches. I laid a pair of stripped main plates out on my work bench and slowly began to pick between cogs within a fine sea of parts that spread across the bench-top. I pulled out flotsam of steel, brass and titanium in matching pairs to relocate on the main plates. In layering the cogs and gears I was careful to leave those red droplets glowing in my desk light. After some indeterminate time had passed I was satisfied with the wrist watches’ new arrangement and I imagined them already resting on earlobes, far away from the warm limbo of my workshop, and their past lives on wrists.
