Clockwork Brooches

I paw through the box of loose brooches. I pick up one and then another, rubbing my thumb across their flawless, smooth, resin surfaces. I lift one to my be-spectacled eyes, and lean over into the light of a warm desk lamp. Frozen old clock parts are exposed and held immobile. I peer closer, and closer deeper and deeper, listing the parts I recognise: gear, fly wheel, cog, hands, ruby, main spring, crown... until my eyes reach the chromed main plate—the form and outline to what is now a brooch. I peer into the landscape of the plate, the valleys and plateaus, the craters and crevices. I turn it over and note a serial number or maker’s mark. A secure brooch clasp is embedded in the resin which has seeped through the openings in the main plate. I open the clasp and pin the brooch to the centre my ember red silk cravat.
