I spun out of the firm’s door and onto the terrace. The lunchtime crowds were rushing around me under the grey buildings and dark sky. The air was muggy with automobile fumes and inevitable rain, nevertheless there was a veritable wind tunnel on the street. I bent my head towards the oncoming traffic and set off as quickly as I could between the crowds. I strode out longer and longer. Raised one hand to my hat brim, to hold it in place against the gusting wind and fast cornering buses. Despite my haste I could not suppress a smile of pleasure on seeing the fine gentlemen rushing towards me their ties flying up at odd intervals, an unsyncopated chorus of slaps to the face. My tie was held firmly in place via an ingenious mechanism, a tie pin. It sat proudly and discretely on the surface of the tie fabric. A balanced array of clock parts and tiny gems securely held in resin. At the back a sturdy post penetrated the tie. A neat chain ran from the clutch to the discrete toggle bar sitting in my buttonhole.
