The train doors opened and yet more passengers squeezed into the already wheezing carriage. I was forced to close the folio of manuscripts of steel details and force calculations, to tuck it precariously under my left arm. With my right I grasped the leather strap above my head. I young lady was pressed close to me in the throng. Her green skirts folded around her legs and mine. Her warm perfume swelled about me. Her nose pointed straight at my chest, and I looked down on her rich black hair, braided into a neat bun. Something about my person seemed to have caught her attention. Perhaps, the confident set of my chest, the fine tailoring of my waist coat, the exquisite softness of my cravat, or the precise yet delicate combination of cogs and wheels that made up my cravat pin.
She looked up to meet my gaze. At that moment the train pulled into the station with a breaking motion that shoved us all around without dignity. She raised an eyebrow and wrinkled her nose for a moment at my soft apologetic smile. “That,” she said, “is a startling cravat pin.” The doors to the carriage opened and in one deft movement she removed the pin and was lost in the swirling crowd of the station.
