When I had set and pinned the last of the exotic wasps in their leather display case I fished out my fob watch from the pocket of my dress trousers. I was running a little late. I rolled down the sleeves of my fine Indian cotton shirt and groped about my bed side looking for something to contain the starched French cuffs. My hand fell on a small dark box, a gift from my associates at the institute. Inside delicate watch parts hung suspended under domes of resin, like insects washed clean of their soft tissue and stored in a viscous fluid. I saw wings, legs, antenna, taxonomic similarities and differences. I clipped my cuffs together with the polished brass and was briefly troubled by an unexpected and horrifying vision of a swarm of mechanical wasps. I shook my head quickly to free the image and made my way to the entrance hall amongst a remnant buzzing.
