“Sunday,” I grumbled to myself brushing dust from the shoulders of my best jacket. “Who has a party on a bloody Sunday?” I asked the almost unrecognisable man in the mirror as I leant in to tie my new cravat. The old one lay across my work boots in the corner, both now deeply ingrained with machine oil. I picked up the cravat pin inset with tiny mechanical parts that reminded me of propellers, and stabbed my thumb trying to fix the bloody thing, in the middle of the bloody cravat, for a party on a bloody Sunday! 

There was heavy thudding on the front door downstairs and my window started to rattle steadily in its frame. It could only be one thing. She was here. My heart thumped an echo. Bloody, Sunday. Bloody. I jammed my hat on my head, grabbed my only scarf from the cupboard and wound it round my neck. “Bloody good enough,” I told the mirror, stepped out onto the landing, and vaulted down the stairs.

I heard a much more polite knock on the front door as I reached to open it. “Hello,” I said to the inswell of air, dried leaves, smoke, long brown hair, and her full, embroidered grey skirts.

“Hello,” she said pushing up her dark goggles onto the top of her head. The gesture left a shimmering streak of black grease across her cheek that made me grin inexplicably. “The car’s in the garage again I’m afraid,” she said and tugging on the worn rope ladder in her right hand, “I hope you don’t mind heights?”
